Bankmed Medical Scheme
Restricted scheme · Banking and financial services sector · Administered by Discovery Health · 6 plan options for 2026
Overview
Bankmed Medical Scheme is a registered non-profit restricted medical scheme regulated by the Council for Medical Schemes under the Medical Schemes Act 131 of 1998. The Scheme serves employees, pensioners, and eligible dependants of participating banking and financial services employers — including member banks of the Banking Association South Africa (BASA) and FSCA-regulated financial institutions.
Bankmed has operated in the banking sector for several decades, evolving through changes in the South African financial services landscape. Its current administrative model — entrusting day-to-day administration to Discovery Health (Pty) Ltd while the Board of Trustees retains governance — allows members to access Discovery's managed-care infrastructure and hospital network, while benefiting from restricted-scheme pricing that reflects the sector's relatively favourable demographic and risk profile.
The banking and financial services sector's membership characteristics (typically higher-income, educated, relatively young, health-conscious) produce a risk pool that enables Bankmed to offer competitive benefits at contained cost. The Scheme is among the larger restricted schemes by membership in South Africa, though detailed member counts are not publicly disclosed in current website materials.

Membership Profile
Bankmed's membership is drawn from the formal banking and financial services sector — an employer base characterised by full-time employment contracts, above-average incomes, and access to employer benefit contributions. This produces a membership with a relatively favourable demographic profile: younger-leaning, lower-than-average pensioner ratios compared to many open schemes, and above-average health awareness.
Granular principal-member counts are not publicly disclosed in current Bankmed website materials. The Scheme's AGM booklet and annual report contain detailed member statistics for those wishing to review them.
Membership requirements
Bankmed is restricted to employees and pensioners of participating banking and financial services employers, and their qualifying dependants. Open-scheme alternatives must be considered by sector employees whose employer does not participate in Bankmed.

Financial Health
Bankmed reports a solvency ratio above the 25% statutory minimum requirement under Regulation 29(2) of the Medical Schemes Act. The Scheme has not appeared in CMS solvency-breach notices. Detailed solvency ratios, accumulated funds, and contributions income are published in the annual Benefit and Contribution Schedule and AGM booklet, which are publicly accessible on the Bankmed website.
The favourable risk profile of the banking sector membership — higher incomes, relatively younger average age, lower-risk occupations, and higher participation in preventive care — contributes to a cost structure that allows competitive benefit levels and contribution stability.

Key Benefits & Differentiators
Discovery administration with restricted-scheme pricing. By outsourcing administration to Discovery Health, Bankmed members access the same managed-care infrastructure — hospital networks, telehealth, electronic pre-authorisation, ICON oncology protocols — as Discovery Health Medical Scheme members, but at a contribution scale calibrated to a restricted employer group. This is one of the most significant structural advantages of the Scheme.
Oncology Care Programme. Bankmed operates a structured oncology benefit managed through Discovery's oncology care protocols. Members with a cancer diagnosis receive pre-authorised access to chemotherapy, radiation, and related in-hospital treatments within the plan's defined annual oncology limits. Disease management support is included.
Chronic disease management. All plans cover the 27 PMB Chronic Disease List (CDL) conditions at legislated cost. Mid-tier plans (Core Saver, Traditional) and above add structured chronic registration programmes for a broader list of conditions, including managed access to formulary-aligned medication.
Telehealth and digital health access. Via Discovery Health's administration, Bankmed members on qualifying plans can access telehealth consultation services, enabling GP consultations via video without requiring physical travel — a benefit increasingly valued by banking sector employees who may work long or non-standard hours.
Mental health cover. All plans include PMB-level psychiatric hospitalisation. Comprehensive and Plus plans extend to outpatient psychology and psychiatry consultations within defined annual limits.

Wellness & Loyalty
Bankmed members have access to wellness benefits through the Discovery Vitality structure, available as an opt-in additional programme. Vitality access for Bankmed members allows participation in health checks, gym discounts, and Active Rewards — subject to the same tier structure as Vitality members on other Discovery-administered schemes.
The availability and specific terms of Vitality for Bankmed members should be confirmed directly with Bankmed, as Vitality is an optional add-on rather than a scheme-included benefit and terms may differ from standard Discovery Health Vitality conditions.

Claims & Service
Claims are processed via Discovery Health's administration infrastructure. Bankmed members use the Discovery member app and online member portal — with Bankmed-specific benefit data loaded — to check claims, manage authorisations, and download tax certificates. Providers submit claims electronically via standard EDI channels.
Dispute resolution follows the Medical Schemes Act process: internal dispute committee → CMS adjudication. Discovery Health's claims infrastructure includes established exception-handling protocols for common dispute types (out-of-network claims, oncology pre-authorisation, chronic registration).

How the Scheme Is Set Up
Bankmed is available only to employees and pensioners of participating banking and financial services employers. Within that eligible population:
Entry-level and junior banking staff (Essential / Basic): Essential at R893pm is one of the most affordable DSP-network hospital plans administered by Discovery Health in South Africa. For a junior bank employee who needs hospital cover and cannot afford open-scheme premiums, this is a structurally sound value option — especially where the employer contributes a portion of the premium.
Mid-career banking employees with families (Core Saver / Traditional / Comprehensive): The Core Saver and Traditional plans offer a savings-and-hospital or traditional-benefit structure designed around employees with moderate day-to-day healthcare use, growing families, and one or more chronic conditions. Comprehensive adds the breadth needed for families with more complex or diverse medical needs.
Senior banking professionals (Plus): The top-tier Plus plan provides maximum benefit limits and any-provider access — appropriate for senior executives and professionals who may require specialist-heavy care, have complex medical situations, or simply value the peace of mind of top-tier cover without a managed-care DSP restriction.

Eligibility & Continuation
Who can join: Current employees and pensioners of participating employers in the banking and financial services sector — specifically, member banks of the Banking Association South Africa (BASA), FSCA-regulated financial institutions, and other employers admitted to the Bankmed employer register. Employees of non-participating employers cannot join Bankmed even if they work in a related sector.
Employer participation: An employee's eligibility depends on their employer being a participating Bankmed employer. Employees should confirm this with their HR department. Some banking and financial services employers run their own restricted schemes or contribute to open-scheme options instead of Bankmed.
Pensioners: Employees of participating employers who retire from service may continue on Bankmed as pensioner members under the Scheme Rules' continuation-member provisions. The specific conditions (years of service, type of retirement) are defined in the Bankmed Scheme Rules.
What happens when you leave a participating employer: Most employees who resign, are dismissed, or move to a non-participating employer must exit Bankmed and transfer to an open medical scheme. The Medical Schemes Act's portability provisions apply — existing conditions are protected and a new scheme cannot impose waiting periods for those already covered for the same conditions.
Dependants: Qualifying dependants (spouse/life partner and dependent children as defined in the Scheme Rules) remain on Bankmed while the principal member is enrolled. Continuation rules govern surviving-spouse and child cover on the principal member's death.
